Synopsis:

On board an old tramp steamer anchored outside the harbor, Margot and Lamont are on the trail of Al Davis, the escaped “Carnival Killer.” A detective named Scott insists Davis is on board and won’t allow anyone off the steamer until the confidence man is apprehended and arrested. During a cat and mouse game through compartments and cabins, Scott is shot dead and the body of the captain is found with a knife in its back. When The Shadow discovers that Fernandez, the first mate, was responsible for smuggling Davis on board, he locks Fernandez in his room. When Ella Cathaway is convinced by a man masquerading as Lamont that it’s not safe on board and it’s time to grab her valuables and make a getaway, she discovers the wealthy socialite is bent on robbing her blind. The Shadow knocks the imposter unconscious and later the real Lamont explains the solution: Davis used to be a carnival impersonator and mimic, who worked his confidence rackets by learning every trick he could in the art of disguise. He impersonated the captain shortly after murdering him, and in fear of being discovered, resorted to posing as Lamont Cranston for the purpose of robbing Ella and leaving the boat.
