Synopsis:
Adam Witherspoon, an eccentric clockmaker, was mysteriously killed and his body destroyed when a giant timepiece in a church steeple suddenly exploded. Investigating the murder, Margot and Lamont hear the “ghost clock” toll and the weird laughter of the strange old man. Nina, Witherspoon’s niece, is almost a victim of the scheme until Lamont throws an exploding clock away in the nick of time. Mr. Goodson, Witherspoon’s business partner, is killed by an exploding clock, leaving only two suspects — Nina and Carl McReedy, Witherspoon’s bookkeeper, who at one time was trying to blackmail Goodson for the crimes. Downstairs in Witherspoon’s secret workshop, Margot and Nina discover Witherspoon is out of his mind, with a large clock set to go off in a few minutes. Locked inside with The Shadow, the girls panic until Nina, under the strain, confesses she rigged the clocks to gain her uncle’s fortune. After confessing, they escape within seconds of the explosion. Having survived the steeple incident, Witherspoon remained in hiding hoping to uncover the truth about who was trying to kill him, hence the mad laugh and ghost clock in the steeple.
