Synopsis:

Psychiatrist Alfred Foster calls on criminologist Lamont Cranston to help him find Bert Eustis, a patient who recently escaped from a private sanitarium located in a densely wooded area in the suburbs. Bert is extremely unbalanced emotionally and sets about committing violent murders based on the bedtime stories and nursery rhymes read to him as a child. Bert’s periods of insanity take the life of intern Ralph Andrews and his wife, Polly. Lamont questions Bert’s father but finds Bert dead at the top of the stairs. Returning to the sanitarium, Margot discovers to her horror that the real killer is Foster — not Bert. Before she becomes the next victim, The Shadow arrives to torment the killer and reveal the solution to the mystery. Foster is a clever quack so obsessed with abnormal cases such as that of Bert Eustis that he became unbalanced himself. Bert’s escape was the snapping point for Foster and he thought he could blame the murders on Bert.
