Synopsis:

Death has struck down the director of the play, “The Trail of the Knifer.” In an effort to discover the identity of the real “knifer” and who substituted a real blade for the prop one, Lamont follows Flarrity, the stage manager, who flees to a bar and grill next door. Lamont is knocked unconscious for his efforts. When Flarrity is found in an alley stabbed in the back, the dying man tells of a hidden room with a trap door underneath the stage. The Shadow pays a visit to the room to find the actor playing the knifer (the lead suspect) at odds with the leading lady, Lois Legtown. First performed in 1923, the play was based on historical fact that involved Lois’ father and she didn’t want his life brought before the public again. Her tries at sabotaging the production failed so she attempted murder. When The Shadow prevents her from stabbing the prime suspect, she starts to flee the theater with knife in hand — and the police shoot to kill.
