Synopsis:
Unable to decide whether miserly, neurotic old Hepzibah Sefton really has been threatened with murder — as she maintains — or is mentally unbalanced, Margot and Lamont agree to stay on Sefton Island at her invitation. When the old woman disappears from her room, the entire family searches every inch of the estate. Realizing the family is suffering from a case of nerves, Lamont plants the notion of a killer hearing the heartbeat of his victim while Margot stands off to the side reproducing the sound of a heartbeat. As The Shadow, Lamont tortures the only person who claims to hear the heartbeats, following young nephew Paul to the barn outside. Digging up the corpse of his aunt, Paul suspects he is going mad and hopes to silence the old woman’s heartbeat so he can sleep comfortably. The Shadow laughs, having discovered the whereabouts of old Hepzibah. Realizing he was tricked, Paul attempts to use the ax on The Shadow, but slips on a loose floorboard and falls on the sharp edge of the ax, killing himself.
