Synopsis:
In the dark swamps deep in the bayous of Louisiana, Helene La Farge Christophe, last of the La Farge line, is suffering from unexplainable pains. According to the original La Farge will, in order to inherit the island, she must live in the decrepit mansion for two months every year. Lamont and Margot find evidence of devil worship on the island in the form of a dead goat hanging by the neck. Peter Christophe seems convinced that the only way he can save his wife is to kill the local conjure-man, Papa Bouki, who is taking shelter on the island. Dr. Gaspard arrives to ease Helene’s pain and later introduces Lamont to Papa Bouki. After piecing together the clues, The Shadow visits Peter to learn the truth: Helene’s husband brought back from the jungles of Africa a rare poison that cannot be detected. In trying to poison Helene, his intention was to throw blame on Papa Bouki so he could inherit the island from his wife. She forbade digging any wells but Peter knew that oil was so close to the surface that it was seeping into the swamp water. Using his only bullet, Peter attempts to shoot The Shadow but misses and hangs his head in shame. His secret exposed means he’s at the end of the rope, just like the goat he hanged as part of his crazy scheme.
