Synopsis:
Bruce Fenton’s wife is returning home from a long sanitarium stay after suffering a nervous breakdown. Fearful that she discover that he gambled away much of her fortune, he plots with prominent artist Hans Schneider, to reproduce his famed “Mortal Sorrow,” a painting that supposedly drove people to insanity and murder. When a big-time gambler is impatient for his payoff, Fenton decides not to sell the painting, but to use the remainder of his wife’s fortune to pay his debt and use the painting to drive her back to the sanitarium. Close on the heels of the phony artwork, The Shadow discovers the secret to the madness: a diabolically ingenious mechanism — a very small tape recorder with a continuous tape going around and around sending out high-pitched vibrations that affect human nerves. Turning the machine against Fenton, The Shadow gets a confession.
