A baby boy survived the marriage and Lydia claims guardianship of her grandson but Fortunato warns his men and the child is spirited away. After learning the truth from Lydia, who returns after venturing to Orvieto in an attempt to take her grandson back home with her, Lamont pays a visit to the former gangster under the guise of The Shadow. The Shadow explains that the boy needs a mother and a guiding hand.Fortunato always hated the woman but, after listening to the Easter church bells from St. Peters, he has a change of heart and agrees to let the boy go under one condition — she brings the child back to Rome every year around Easter.
