Synopsis:

Investigating the mysterious disappearance of a famous plastic surgeon, Dr. Hagen, and his nurse, Nora Adams, Lamont and Margot find a rough sketch in Hagen’s office which seems to implicate Scar Mellot, an ex-bootlegger, ex-convict and reputed czar of a half dozen rackets. Notable with a wound from his ear to his chin, Scar forces the doctor to perform plastic surgery on him so he can evade the police who desperately want to deport him because he lied on his citizenship application. The Shadow pressures Biff, Scar’s bodyguard, into revealing his secret location, a cottage in Ocean Beach. Knowing that the purpose of such an operation is a failure without the silence of those involved, The Shadow races to save the doctor and nurse. In private, The Shadow convinces the doctor to bluff his way with Scar whose nerves are already at the breaking point. Dr. Hagen tells Scar that he inserted a tiny capsule of deadly poison under the skin graft that will dissolve from Scar’s body heat and that the poison will destroy his mind. Hearing the laughter of The Shadow, Scar panics and accepts his fate — the doctor will only remove the capsule under police supervision back at the hospital.
