Synopsis:

In a last-hour effort to stop the execution of Jim Martin, whom even Weston believes was convicted on the perjured testimony of an eyewitness, The Shadow visits the deserted tavern where the murder of a bookie occurred. Learning that Sam Walker wrote a confession and hid it to ensure his safety from the real killer, The Shadow plagues and torments the witness. Walker’s mind cracks under the strain of both fear and remorse. Discovering he cannot escape the maddening torment of a guilty conscience and led by The Shadow’s verbal jabs, he gives The Shadow a written confession. Walker then attempts to phone the governor but killer Marty Barton attempts to silence him. The Shadow interferes by taking Barton’s gun and hands it to Walker. A stay of execution is granted for Jim Martin.
