Synopsis:
Private Detective Barney Rapp has been working a case that involves keeping tabs on wealthy actress Diane Harriman, who has a one-third share in a recent stage production. When Diane is shot dead in the alley outside the stage door, Lamont and Margot assist Barney with the case. Suspects include Leland Fabian, the producer who disagreed with Diane’s ideas for the production, and her Aunt Agnes, who hired Barney to keep tabs on Diane and ensure she was not mixing with the wrong crowd. Barney arrives at his office with a gunshot wound, supposedly from Leland’s gun. Margot soon discovers that Barney is the murderer and the detective confesses his love for the actress. He couldn’t get her out of his mind but when she laughed at him in the alley, he shot her. Attempting to flee from the office with Margot as a human shield, Barney encounters The Shadow, who proves the gunshot wound was faked and had figured out who was the guilty party. In desperation, Barney jumps out the window to his death.
