Synopsis:

What started out as an insurance fraud gone haywire has to be corrected when the supposed body of Chet Grove wasn’t destroyed in a flaming automobile arranged as an “accident.” Having witnessed the car crash, Lamont and Margot agree to help the state police by reporting the death personally to widow Lila Grove. When Lamont discovers the man in the morgue is not the same man in photographs in Lila’s house, he suspects foul play. Vic Weber, a friend of Lila’s, attempts to cover their tracks by replacing the body of the hitchhiker in the morgue with that of the real Chet Grove and setting fire to the morgue. Having attempted to fake his own death for the life insurance payout, Chet discovers too late that his wife and her lover have betrayed him. The Shadow visits the Grove residence and catches Lila and Vic attempting to dispose of the hitchhiker’s body. Vic shoots aimlessly at The Shadow and one bullet ricochets off the cement wall, killing Lila. The state police arrive to take Vic into custody.
