Synopsis:
An hour’s drive from the city, in a section of abandoned farms, heavily-wooded hills and swamps, wealthy sportsman Robert Beck bought and combined a thousand acres into a private hunting and fishing preserve. Arousing the hatred of the natives who have considered the land their own for generations, they retaliated with the sinister signs of a hex. Beck wasn’t scared of their witchcraft but his body was found under mysterious circumstances. Lamont, being a member of Beck’s fishing and hunting club, sets out to inspect the land for the possible purchase of the club only to discover that Beck’s death was murder. Investigation reveals his widow, Lila, was secretly spending time with Hank Weber, a young farmer. Each suspected the other of murder and kept quiet during the inquest, but the real murderer was Jud Jameson, a cryptic rustic who was making his living killing deer and selling venison to city restaurants. Beck discovered this and a confrontation led to murder. After killing Hank because he knows too much, Jud attempts to dispose of the corpse by dowsing a barn with gasoline and setting it afire. Upon learning what happened to her lover, Lila is shocked to find out why Jud killed her husband. The Shadow arrives to prevent her murder and Jud soon meets justice when he slips on gravel and falls on his gun which fatally discharges.
