Synopsis:
When jockey Eddie Malloy is trampled to death by Gray Ghost — a sure thing for the Gold Cup — owner John Morgan accused his rival, Leo Durand, of interference. Morgan went into debt in hopes of winning the cup and Durand holds the notes against him. Durand claims he had no involvement, having stayed at a hotel in Chicago at the time. Lamont inquires and verifies Durand’s claim. After a failed attempt on the lives of Lamont and Margot in the same fashion, The Shadow pays Alice Morgan a visit to substantiate what he suspected: she was having an affair with Durand. Climbing atop the stable, she poured drops of acid on Gray Ghost, causing the horse to go wild and trample Eddie Malloy. Alice and Durand hoped that John Morgan would go bankrupt so she could leave her husband and start a new life of love and riches. Durand takes shots at The Shadow, emptying his gun, but discovers those who take life must pay with their own.
