Synopsis:
The Kitchamona Indians live in an area that used to honor the swamp as God of Evil. One Indian brave each year would be “fed” to the swamp, and if rejected, a whole family might be lost. Even though it was one year ago that Mrs. Roland Anderson’s husband died in the swamp, she invites Lamont to investigate the unusual circumstances. Her three stepchildren, Tommy, Mark and Sara, are the only kin left to carry on the family name. Tommy and Mark, however, become victims of the man-eating marsh. The Shadow questions Romo, the Andersons’ Indian servant, to learn the facts behind the deaths. Before Sara can become the next victim, The Shadow arrives to save Mrs. Anderson from a fate worse than death at the hands of Romo, who has gone crazy. While Romo’s mind recently snapped as a result of the deaths, it was Mrs. Anderson who committed the murders. She had a secret hiding place in the dense foliage of the swamp, and she was never really wheelchair-bound. She couldn’t win her husband’s love, so she tried to get his sympathy. When her husband died by accident in the swamp, she was cut out of the inheritance and decided to capitalize on the marsh legend.
