Synopsis:

Not long after Lamont Cranston reports the murder of Bill Gray, he visits an old-fashioned frame cottage on Crater Street, run by a gray-haired motherly woman named Mrs. Hadley. Bill’s sister Joan was admitted to a sanitarium because of her fear of the dark, insisting a light remain on constantly. A murder outside the cottage causes the police to seek Joan as the suspect, having recently escaped from the sanitarium. Investigating, Lamont discovers that her husband never went missing — he was sent to prison for the theft of an Oriental necklace worth one hundred thousand dollars. Joan’s insistence for keeping the light on led to the solution of the mystery — the pearls were disguised as the chain of the electric light switch and to keep it from being noticed, Joan insisted on keeping the light on. Mrs. Hadley committed the murder of her accomplice, Augie Wallace, to cover her tracks in hopes that Joan might be accused of the crime while the old woman searched for the missing necklace. Confessing he knew the whereabouts of the necklace, Lamont set himself up as bait to trap Mrs. Hadley in an attempt to murder him since he had been unable to gather any real evidence that would convict her in court.
