Synopsis:
In response to a strange and disturbing telegram from a sheriff friend, Lamont and Margot drive up to Rock Cove Lodge, high on Cave Mountain. There, the local sheriff suspects a series of fatal hunting accidents in the Tate family may have been murders — regardless of the large number of animal cries heard throughout the woods. Mark Tate shot and killed a huge mountain lion and claims its vengeful mate was responsible for him being handicapped and the deaths of his two sons. After the body of the sheriff is found with his throat torn, Lamont suspects the lack of blood loss indicates the man was dead before the savage attack. The ever-inquisitive Margot snoops around and discovers that Reba West, the embittered housekeeper of Mark Tate, lost her husband when a hunter shot him accidentally. Reba skinned the dead mountain lion and, armed with a mask of its head and gloves made from the two front paws, committed the murders to make the people think the big cat killed the Tate boys. The Shadow grabs hold of Reba while Margot ties her up so the State authorities arriving later that day can take over.
