Synopsis:
Lamont and Margot accompany Jean Abbott to her house to investigate a murder she says she committed, but no trace of any body or struggle can be found at the scene. She came from the Midwest to help her brother, Bill, who joined the staff of Noel Dunbar, the reform candidate. Her brother, however, has disappeared and someone attempting to send her back to the Midwest became a victim of a struggle and murder. Suspecting her story is true, even with no evidence, Lamont investigates Mayor Willis, who is running for re-election. Dunbar hired private investigator, Lou Garvey, to help investigate the mayor. Jean Abbott is found murdered — her body in the trunk of the mayor’s car. But when the body of her brother is found at the bottom of the river, Lamont discovers that the mayor is completely innocent. The Shadow visits Garvey and steals his gun, correctly suggesting it is the murder weapon. When Garvey panics, accidentally revealing his guilt in front of Margot, he and Dunbar are exposed by The Shadow — Dunbar owns the gambling syndicate trying to take over the town. He couldn’t get to Mayor Willis through his intermediaries, so he decided to run against him. He hired Garvey to use Bill Abbott in a game that would keep His Honor out of the way until the election was over. Bill was shot and the blame directed toward the mayor.
