Synopsis:

During a New Year’s party at the home of Max Correl, the noted critic and lecturer, a party crasher named Bertha Kenney is found dead from a dagger wound under the left armpit. Two lead suspects are her husband Clyde and his girlfriend Judy. Margot finds the murder weapon in the back seat of Judy’s automobile; it was part of Clyde’s pirate costume. Correl attempts to thwart the investigation, but The Shadow manages to trick him into revealing the photographs from the evening party, giving Lamont the lead he needs to get a confession from Bratter — a man Bertha hired to murder her and frame her husband. Twenty grand for the killer and the chair for her husband — it was an act of vengeance for her unfaithful spouse. When the pair reconciled at the party, she tried to call it off. Bratter committed the murder and attempted to frame Judy, so he could blackmail Clyde into a larger payoff since he inherited Bertha’s money.
