Synopsis:
On board a train bound for Chicago, stage performer Vera Lorenz, who uses a coffin in her dance act, requests assistance from Lamont and Margot. She claims a man named Chet Gordon is trying to kill her. When the sleuths attempt to trap him in the final car of the train, they are knocked unconscious and awake to find Vera and her luggage have vanished — with Chet’s body now in her coffin. When Lamont and Margot visit The Starlight Club to meet Vera, they discover a different woman performing under the same name. Although puzzled at first, Lamont pieces together the clues to solve the mystery. Vera’s manager Roy Tyson, was using a false compartment within the coffin to hide counterfeit money, which he distributed in the cities along Vera’s tour route. When Vera caught on to the scheme, Tyson murdered Gordon and hoped to put the blame on Vera, with no one suspicious of another woman taking her place. Before Tyson can murder Vera and complete his plans, The Shadow intervenes and takes hold of Tyson until the police arrive.
