Synopsis:

A number of murders have occurred in the past week, all with two common denominators — the victims were heard to scream something about a man with no face and the bullet cartridges are from a Bergmann 6.5 mm automatic. Lamont and Margot visit the city slums to gather word from the street. Following a lead to a pawnbroker named Vinncy, our heroes are moments too late, finding the pawnbroker dead on the floor and the man with no face making a swift getaway. Lamont and Margot check out newspapers from 1929 and discover that a crook named Chester Slade went on a mad-dog killing rampage two decades before. After being scarred in face and mind by a deadly fire, Slade spent the twenty years tramping the roads until the familiar sights clicked something into place and he began mistaking his innocent victims as the people responsible for double-crossing him. When Margot is perceived as the girl Slade once tried to sacrifice in a warehouse, Lamont races to the same warehouse, already set on fire, to rescue Margot before it is too late. Slade, however, perishes in the fire.
