Synopsis:

Moments after Victor Farnol is hanged by the state for the murder of his uncle, three lawyers — whose combined lack of effective defense sent Farnol to the death house — receive a threatening phone call from the dead man. Fielding’s wife soon vanishes without a trace, followed by Frederic Stokes. The surviving attorneys, Edgar Minton and John Fielding, hire a private detective named Greerson to help solve the mystery. Visiting neighbors, Lamont and Margot drop by to assist Greerson, who is promptly hanged. Lamont cuts him down in time but the killer, who poses as the limping Farnol, manages to loot the safe of half a million dollars in securities. The Shadow questions Minton but the chief suspect is shot dead before he can reveal anything. Margot accidentally finds a hidden room in the attic with the bodies of the missing Vera Fielding and Fred Stokes. Miraculously recovering from his hanging, Greerson reveals that he was in on the scheme with John Minton. The latter was forced to go along with his two partners in convicting an innocent man. The ghost of the dead Farnol was meant to scare the occupants from the house so Greerson and Minton could loot it at their leisure. Greerson killed Minton when he attempted to double-cross his partner. Before Margot becomes the next victim, Fielding is shot by Greerson, who returns the gunfire and both men die.
