Synopsis:
Tom Steele, son of Lieutenant Steele, has been having an affair with Mae Burley. Desperate to be rid of her husband, she convinces young Tom to murder him and make it look like an accident. After the crime is committed, Lamont and Steele question all the tenants in the building and find one witness who recorded an important clue while recording his piano recitals. It doesn’t take long for Lamont to solve the crime with a little assistance from The Shadow who questions Mae while she remains in police custody. When Lamont and Margot discuss the usual post mortems of the case, he discovers an important fact that was almost overlooked. The Shadow returns to Mae’s cell to plague her conscience, forcing her to confess. “The rotten little coward,” she exclaims, “He said he’d kill Joe for me, and all he did was give him two love taps and beat it, leaving me holding the bag.” Under pressure from the invisible avenger, she confesses that she paid a man named Whitey Kale to finish off Joe, put him in a car and drive it off the road. A confession from Kale verifies her story, freeing Tom from a crime he did not commit.
