Synopsis:

After receiving a bloodstained book bound in leather made from human skin, Lamont Cranston finds himself swept up in a whirlwind of strange events climaxed by the almost simultaneous stabbing of three men — one of whom is Shreve, the cab driver.A corpse found in an alley has had its skin removed, and Commissioner Weston says a number of bodies have been found recently in the same condition. After The Shadow questions a fence named Lazarus and an antique dealer named Benda, Lamont discovers who is responsible for the stabbings and murders. Mr. Pennypacker, Lazarus’ secretary, has found it profitable to sell books bound in leather made from human skin. After all, the Borgias had entire libraries bound with it. Margot stumbles on liming vats and tan-pits containing the human skin, but is saved from a similar fate when The Shadow arrives. Attempting to throw himself in a lime pit to avoid the law, Pennypacker discovers an invisible man is holding him back for the police.
