Synopsis:
While Margot and Lamont spend the evening at the Whitford cottage, tension hung over the attractive seaside bungalow since the arrival of Dickie Warren, an old friend of Joan Whitford. Dickie attempts to blackmail Joan for ten thousand dollars in return for his silence, claiming she was responsible for the death of her mother. Joan insists she was in town getting more medicine but Dickie says otherwise. When Dickie fails in his attempt to blackmail George Butler, he kills him. Joan witnesses the crime but, forced to go along with the suicide ruse or face the threat of exposure, lies for Dickie. Lamont discovers the murder weapon burns the hand from a back flash, and, as The Shadow, sets out to prove the real murderer with a paraffin test. Having been found out, Dickie makes a break for it down the short cut to the village — the same path the police are taking toward him.
