Synopsis:
In a castle by the sea built by her father, Barbara Gore dreams of committing murders — and then the murders take place. Out on a drive on Halloween Eve, Lamont and Margot meet Barbara in the middle of the road and take her home. There, Lamont learns the house servant was murdered — her throat torn out. The body of Wilson the handyman is found against the gear levers of the castle’s drawbridge — his corpse resembling a gaunt, blood-drenched scarecrow. Lamont and Margot explore the castle, hoping to find clues. In the cellar, they discover young Barbara crying over the body of her dog. Aunt Em insists the child was responsible for the murders and Barbara will not deny the accusations, suspecting she is going insane. The Shadow foils Aunt Em’s scheme by exposing her intent to convince the world that Barbara is a homicidal maniac. By eliminating Barbara, she would inherit the money left behind by the girl’s father. Aunt Em was using a special gas to make Barbara suffer from hallucinations and nightmares.
