Synopsis:
Punchy Carter, stumblebum fighter who called Lamont Cranston to protect him, made his call too late. Just as Punchy tells Lamont that any one of three people might kill him, he slumps to the ground — a knife in his back. Investigating the only lead he has, Lamont uncovers the truth. Charlie Drake, set to fight Friday evening, has been rejecting the bribes of Nick Moreno to throw the fight in the third round. Charlie prefers to play fair, regardless of the increase offered to him, forcing Moreno to make a death threat against Charlie if he wins the match. The police position themselves at the event throughout the evening, and Charlie wins the fight moments before someone takes a shot at him and misses. In the locker room, Charlie learns that his manager, Pop Rogers, lost a good bit of money hoping his prizefighter would fall in the third round. It seems Moreno was killed the night before in a gunfight with the police. Pop passed on information about Charlie’s past to Moreno, hoping blackmail might serve better than money when Charlie wasn’t willing to accept a bribe. Before Pop can shoot Charlie, The Shadow knocks the gun out of his hand so the police arriving in the locker room can take over.
