Synopsis:
On the island of San Hilaire in the West Indies, Lamont and Margot learn of a group of natives who still worship the long-dead Don Pablo Torez. They are led by the defiant mountebank known as Old Janu. When two men are found murdered by the talons of Torez on the Sabbath of Don Pablo, one of whom is Lamont and Margot’s host at the Maitland plantation, Janu is taken for questioning in by Captain Benwood. When Janu escapes, another murder occurs, but this time the body of Janu gives Lamont little doubt that the murderer is close behind. Margot learns that a codebook written in the hand of one of the victims reveals the existence of uranium deposits on the island and that the dead man was on a secret mission for the U.S. government. Captain Benwood is forced to reveal his hand…literally — he wears a steel glove with tips as sharp as daggers. Janu’s death was merely a show for the natives to terrorize them into giving the hunting ground a wide berth. Before Margot can become his next victim, Benwood encounters The Shadow. Desperate to escape, Benwood jumps out the window, unaware that he is falling to his death when he lands on a wild animal trap with teeth as sharp as spikes.
